Microsoft shuts down Xandr
Just last week, Microsoft announced it will be depreciating its demand-side platform (DSP), Xandr Invest (formerly AppNexus), by February 28th of 2026.
According to Microsoft “This decision is part of a broader strategic shift towards AI-driven advertising and a move to focus on a single, AI-powered Microsoft Advertising Platform.” Microsoft believes traditional DSPs don't align with its future vision for private, personalized, and conversational advertising experiences.
The DSP will reportedly be replaced by a chatbot-style ad-buying product powered by Microsoft’s generative AI solution, Copilot.

Consolidation & A.I.’s Role in the Future of Advertising
The decision by Microsoft to dismantle its full-stack DSP signals a growing trend of consolidation in the ad tech industry and a broader shift towards AI-driven solutions.
This movement is echoed across the industry, with The Trade Desk consolidating its supply path through OpenPath to optimize ad spend. Supply-Side Platforms (SSPs) like PubMatic and Nexxen further illustrate this trend by launching and acquiring their own DSPs—Activate and Amobee, respectively—in an effort to centralize advertising dollars.
By leveraging AI, companies that consolidate can analyze vast amounts of data in real-time, enabling more informed decision-making and personalized advertising experiences. While this shift is likely to increase efficiency and effectiveness, it may also significantly impact various roles within the industry.”
Who might be affected?
Positions such as media buyers and ad operations specialists may see a decline as AI automates routine tasks like media buying and campaign monitoring. Data analysts might also face changes, as AI tools take over the heavy lifting, requiring them to focus more on interpreting insights rather than basic analysis. Similarly, campaign managers and account managers may need to adapt their skill sets to integrate more data and technology discussions into their client interactions.
Ultimately, knowing how to effectively utilize AI tools will be a vital skill across all roles, and be essential for remaining competitive in the market.
Max is now…”HBO Max” again?

Yes. In an ironic twist Warner Bros Discovery is rebranding the streaming service Max back to HBO Max this summer. This change comes just over two years after the company initially dropped the "HBO" name from the service. The rebrand is expected to take place in the coming months, and is likely a response to subscriber viewing trends that show a strong affinity for HBO content.
In other news, this does not affect me or the other 122 Million “HBO Max” user’s who have still been calling it “HBO” since they changed it to “Max”, “HBO Now”, and “HBO Go.”
